NFL Week One Round-Up
Written by: Andrew Felton
It is finally here, the NFL is back. With the new season up and running, here's a look at this weekend's results and who showed up in week one.
Thursday Night Football
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-0) 31 - 29 Dallas Cowboys (0-1)
As the current champions started their campaign, how they ended last season in winning style, it was the G.O.A.T proving doubters (if there are still any left) wrong again with 379 passing yards and 4 passing touchdowns, helped by his wide receivers Antonio Brown, who is back for another season, with 1 touchdown and 121 receiving yards, along with Chris Goodwin also with 105 yards and a touchdown. It was not just the wide receivers in Tampa Bay as Gronkowski linked up for 2 ‘tuddies’ with Brady, taking the tally for touchdowns between the pair to 100. The Cowboys did also put on a show with Prescott, returning from injury last season, to pass for over 400 yards, 3 touchdowns, and helped both Amari Cooper and CeeDee Lamb to over 100 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns combined. It will be worth keeping an on this Cowboys offense during the season as they only have one target in mind, the Super Bowl.
Early Sunday Games
Minnesota Vikings (0-1) 24 - 27 Cincinnati Bengals (1-0) (after overtime)
Week one and already a game decided by overtime, with the Bengals completing a field goal in the closing minute of OT. With Joe Burrow back for the Bengals after injury last season, linking up with LSU rookie Ja’Marr Chase, who had 101 receiving yards, including 1 touchdown, and also managed to use the ground game to their advantage with Joe Mixon rushing for 127 yards and 1 touchdown. The Vikings did push the Bengals all the way with Thielen scoring 2 touchdowns, just shy of 100 yards receiving.
Pittsburgh Steelers (1-0) 23 - 16 Buffalo Bills (0-1)
The Steelers turned up and did what they do best, win in the regular season. Big Ben led the line and even added 5 yards rushing, which was a highlight to watch from the 39-year-old (only for comedy value). With a very good team performance from Pittsburgh and the Bills poor display, we can only hope that next week the Bills of last season will turn up.
Arizona Cardinals (1-0) 38 - 13 Tennessee Titans (0-1)
The Cardinals start this season 1-0 and look very impressive all-round, with a stand-out performance by linebacker Chandler Jones, sacking the Titans QB 5 times, and DeAndre Hopkins proving why he is one of the best wide receivers in the league, with 2 touchdowns. The Titans, however, looked very disappointing in this game, scoring only 2 touchdowns, with possibly one of the league's best offenses.
Seattle Seahawks (1-0) 28 - 16 Indianapolis Colts (0-1)
With the Colts not tipped to be one of the best teams this season, the Seahawks turned up and got the job done, with Russell Wilson connecting with Tyler Lockett for 100 yards receiving and 2 touchdowns continuing the great chemistry these two have.
San Francisco 49ers (1-0) 41 - 33 Detroit Lions (0-1)
This game looked certain for the 49ers after taking an early 21 point lead over the Detroit Lions, with star receiver Deebo Samuel notching 189 receiving yards, with 1 touchdown, and Elijah Mitchell who rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown. However, the Lions did not give up as Goff rallied a comeback with 338 passing yards, 3 touchdowns, and even the special teams retrieving an onside kick. This was not enough though as the 49ers held on to start the season with a win.
Philadelphia Eagles (1-0) 32 - 6 Atlanta Falcons (0-1)
Jalen Hurts is now the trusted Quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, as they hope he can take the franchise back to Super Bowl stardom and that he did. With 264 passing yards, 62 rushing yards, 3 touchdowns, and a passer rating of 126.4, Hurts drove the Eagles offense to a victory, with the Falcons only able to put 6 points on the board.
Los Angeles Chargers (1-0) 20 - 16 The Washington Football Team (0-1)
Last season's Rookie of the Year Justin Herbert, started his campaign with a win. This game saw Keenan Allen go for 100 receiving yards, as well as icing the game with a 1st down catch late on in the game. Bad news for the Washington Football team as Ryan Fitzpatrick was injured and is now on IR, which means Taylor Heinicke will take over that position unless they lookout to sign a free agent like Cam Newton.
New York Jets (0-1) 14 - 19 Carolina Panthers (1-0)
With both teams making a slow start and the Jets struggling to put points on the board early, Rookie Quarterback and second pick of the draft Zach Wilson did manage to grow into the game with 258 passing yards and 2 touchdowns. However, this was not enough, as Carolina’s main man Christian McCaffrey had 98 rushing yards and 89 receiving yards, showing the NFL that this season he will be doing work on the ground and in the air.
Jacksonville Jaguars (0-1) 21 - 37 Houston Texans (1-0)
With the number one draft pick getting the starting job in Jackson, it was not the dream debut Trevor Lawrence hoped for losing his first regular-season game in his career including high school and college. This said, Lawrence did throw for over 300 yards and had 3 touchdown passes but, just was not enough for the Texans who impressed with new starting Quarterback Tyrod Taylor and Brandin Cooks who had an impressive 132 receiving yards. So with Deshaun Watson out of the equation, can Tyrod Taylor take this Texans team all the way?
Late Sunday Games
Cleveland Browns (0-1) 29 - 33 Kansas City Chiefs (1-0)
This was named as the standout game of the day in the NFL and it did not disappoint, with the Brown coming out all guns blazing taking an early lead and looking very impressive with Nick Chubb rushing for 83 yards, 2 touchdowns, and Baker Mayfield passing for 321 yards.
However, we all know what happens when Patrick Mahomes is behind in a game and a comeback here was inevitable. With Mahomes again showing why he is arguably the best Quarterback in the league throwing for 337 yards, 3 passing touchdowns, 1 rushing touchdown, and linking up well with his partner in crime Tyreek Hill who put on a show with 197 receiving yards and 1 touchdown for 75 yards, this team is looking as impressive as ever and both these teams should be up there when it comes the playoffs.
Miami Dolphins (1-0) 17 - 16 New England Patriots (0-1)
Tua vs Mac was one a lot of fans wanted to see and a very close game entailed, with the Miami Dolphins taking the victory. The Patriots did put up a very good fight with new rookie Quarterback Mac Jones trying to carry the franchise on his back, after taking Cam Newton's starting spot with 281 passing yards and 1 touchdown, alongside Damien Harris who had a 100 rushing yard game.
Green Bay Packers (0-1) 3 - 38 New Orleans Saints (1-0)
The less said about Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers performance the better, as the Saints turned up in Jacksonville ready for business. With this game moved due to hurricane Ida, it did not stop the Saints, as they put up 38 points, with Jameis Winston throwing 5 touchdowns, showing the fans he can be the perfect man for the job, looking to take the Saints to the Super Bowl.
Denver Broncos (1-0) 27 - 13 New York Giants (0-1)
Melvin Gordon and Teddy Bridgewater lead the way for the Broncos, as they take the season opener against the Giants, with Gordon rushing for 101 yards and a touchdown, backed up by Bridgewater passing for 264 yards and 2 touchdowns. As for the Giants, well, good luck on trying to get a winning season.
Sunday Night Football
Chicago Bears (0-1) 14 - 34 Los Angeles Rams (1-0)
The Los Angeles Rams and new Quarterback choice Matthew Stafford showed that they could be a strong team, with the QB throwing for 321 passing yards and 3 touchdowns, with wide receiver Cooper Kupp having 108 yards receiving and 1 touchdown.
Monday Night Football
Baltimore Ravens (0-1) 27-33 Las Vegas Raiders (1-0)
The Raiders managed to pull up a big upset against the Ravens. Derek Carr looked pretty good as he threw the game-winning 31-yard pass touchdown to Zay Jones in overtime. As for the Ravens, their struggles this season continues, after battling multiple injuries before regular season started.
